By now we’ve all heard of the MoonSwatch a release by the Swatch Group of omega and swatch collaboration that polarized the watch-collecting community. Now it’s back in the collector community with the new Moon shine gold version. If you love the MoonSwatch or hate it there is no denying that it’s hard to get one, you can’t buy them online unless you pay over retail and is it worth it at retail? That’s for you to decide. But if you have MoonSwatch FOMO, or you have a budget that won’t allow you to pay over retail, or you’re simply not a hype train schmuck here are 5 alternatives to the Moonswatch that you can order online right now.
Retail on the moonswatch is $260. These watches all can be bought new for $260 or less not including shipping. From major brands, we have all heard of and all quartz, like the MoonSwatch.
Casio Edifice
The Casio Edifice is an excellent budget-friendly option. What I like about this is it gives you all the pilot watch vibes you want in a Chronograph and the red second's hand is a nice touch or color. It also comes on a bracelet, while it may be a safe bet that the Casio bracelet isn’t spectacular, it’s probably better than the reportedly horrendous strap of the MoonSwatch, and it certainly looks better.
Seiko ssb391
A shockingly well-priced alternative to the moonshine version. The hands may not be recycled gold let alone real gold at all. This is a handsome choice. Gold hands, a carbon fiber style dial, and from a brand that is respected by collectors.41mm case with 100 meters of water resistance make this a great choice, now add in the fact that it’s titanium. I would forgive you for leaving this article now to go buy it.
Tissot Seastar 1000 chronograph
This watch has less of a pilot feel than the others but it still sports the necessary chronograph. What I love about it is the solid look to it, and the 300m water resistance. The 45mm PVD case is a large size, but being PVD does offer a bit of uniqueness, it may not be bioceramic but it’s not plain old shiny steel either. It comes from a trusted Swiss brand and is an excellent choice, call it the mission to the ocean if you have to but it’s a better alternative, hands down.
Citizen Brycen
A stunning watch from Citizen, that packs a lot of features for the price making it an excellent contender. The classic styling of a driving Chronograph, with reliable eco-drive technology and 100m water resistance makes this watch fit well in almost any collection. With other color options available it’s sure to quench your fomo.
Timex Waterbury Classic Chronograph
The most budget of options on this list is the ever-reliable Timex. The handsome Waterbury collection doesn’t disappoint here at all. 40mm case with 30m water resistance. A solid everyday piece that can be dressed up well. Digging into the timex line of chronographs will offer more
Color options than planets and all of them at very budget-friendly prices.
Tissot Quickster
Swiss-made watch with a brand that has recognition amongst collectors and everyday people alike. Unlike the Seastar mentioned above this Tissot chronograph is a more classic Chronograph than a diver Chronograph. This watch is versatile on the included leather strap and can be worn in many situations. They offer this in tons of colors especially if you’re a basketball fan.
Pagani Design PD-1701
Newsflash, I like homages, and I like Pagani Design, don’t at me, I don’t care if you disagree with me.
With that said, if you want the mission to mars or the omega project Alaska, just get this watch. It has all of the great looks that you love and it’s only $83 of the sometimes questionable quality is a problem, but another one and it’s still cheaper than a MoonSwatch. Pagani Design offers this in a wide range of colors so you can get 3 of them for the price of one MoonSwatch. These watches will prob even feel better on the wrist than the swatch version. As far as style per dollar goes, this is hands down the best value on this list.
There are a ton more options that are a far better alternative to the Swatch debacle that is the MoonSwatch. This is just a small sampling of what has caught my eye. My advice to you is don’t jump on the hype train. Get something different. Or don’t, blow your cash and buy one over retail for all I care as long as you’re happy as a collector. But can we all stop blowing our wad for what has clearly become an overhyped swatch that’s being used to steal attention from upcoming releases at soon-to-happen watch shows.
