Bored out of my mind waiting for my wife to shop for god knows what at kohls What’s a watch addict to do? Go kill time looking at watches. Duh. they have more to offer than the Timex boutique at Target. this beautiful blue Seiko caught my eye. I knew almost nothing about it but don’t need an excuse more than blue to want to get a watch. Tried it on, and fell in love with it. Before it was off my wrist and back under the glass I knew I had to have that watch. But I’m not gonna pay Kohl's retail prices. So went home and did lots of research. To this day it’s the only reference number I remember. That may be because Seiko reference numbers aren’t completely insane. Or because I’ve typed in SRPC91 enough times that my phone recognizes it as a word now. in searching, I learned that save the ocean Seikos donated a part of sales towards ocean conservation. Which I thought was pretty cool. The blue to very dark blue (almost black) gradient on the dial is representative of the ocean being bright at the surface and darker the deeper you go. The texture of the dial represents ocean waves. The gradient is also present on the bezel. There’s a lot to take in, but in a good way, not over cluttered. It’s pleasing to look at and hard to look away from.
Dont @ me
The Seiko reputation for divers, the looks that I loved that were beyond a standard orange Seiko diver (don’t @ me! I know they come in other colors, you know the point I’m making) I knew I was gonna be getting my first big boy dive watch. A respectable upgrade from my Casio Duro and Invicta Pro Diver. (don’t @ me, I don’t give a shit what you think about Invicta) Turns out I was right. I ended up buying it second-hand although "like new" from Facebook, and it came with an extra rubber strap. The original owner had heard like many of us, that the stock Seiko rubber strap is terrible. I didn’t want the wrist cheese strap so threw the brand new Seiko strap on, and realized something. Most of you schmucks talking shit about the Seiko rubber straps are wrong. (Don’t @ me! I love the rubber)
ok, this watch is great. A serious diver, a great stock rubber strap (suck it nerds) the Seiko street cred, and it wears way better than the dimensions would suggest. Despite my enjoyment of the rubber, (stop snickering perverts) I love this on a nato. It lives almost only on a blue and white nato, but every once in a while I throw it on a grey nato and it works so well.
This watch is a great watch that I don’t have to worry about. A theme you’ll see I love with watches. I don’t like to think too much. Yea I’m sticking with that. Makes it a great travel watch, durable, can handle water, I’ve even showered in it! Shocking I know. (Don’t @ me, I’ll shower in a vintage dress watch to prove you wrong or right I don’t even care.) anyway, the day date is a favorite feature, the blue ocean theme makes it great for a beach vacation. this watch has been lucky enough to take a dip in the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean as well as the Gulf of Mexico. It works, I can swim in it, it looks great and the fun beach diver vibe is always enjoyable. That’s the point. It works, and it’s enjoyable. if it weren’t, what’s the point.
Now for the bad, this is where I find things to complain about so it doesn't come off as me gushing about everything. the bezel is a little weak. I like a big clicky bezel, and this doesn’t have it. Deal-breaker? no, not for me. Then the accuracy, it’s a 4r36 movement and a workhorse, but this one loses a fair bit of time (-26 ish). But to be fair that’s using the Tool watch app, not putting on a fancy machine or anything. I’ll get it looked at sooner or later, but that's also not a deal-breaker for me and of course, your mileage may vary.
Final Thoughts
on this episode of Jer… never mind. if you're looking for a jump from the Duro or Pro Diver, this is a great choice, assuming you like blue watches. If you don’t care if it’s a diver or not and love blue watches, this is a slam dunk. You can find it at a solid price new or used even though it’s discontinued. Of the save the ocean divers this version of the beloved turtle is the better one. Easy to put on your list, but just as easy to get something else if you're not over the moon about it like I was.
